The next six months will be pivotal for the European chemicals industry as several major regulatory initiatives are expected to be unveiled by the European Commission, following ongoing calls from the industry to strengthen European competitiveness, enhance regulatory clarity, and support sustainable investment across the sector. ISOPA takes an active monitoring role and collaborates across the value chain to support policies that promote safety, innovation, and sustainability.
Among the anticipated measures is the Chemicals Industrial Package, including the long-awaited revision of the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation, one of the cornerstone pieces of EU chemicals legislation. In addition, the Commission is expected to provide greater clarity on the use and management of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
In a recent strategic dialogue with industry representatives, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted the fundamental role of the chemicals industry in daily life and Europe’s broader economic landscape. The President announced the Commission’s intention to publish an Action Plan for the chemicals sector this summer, followed by a sector-specific Omnibus package before year-end aimed at supporting innovation while maintaining high safety and environmental standards.
These initiatives are designed to strike a balance between safeguarding public health and the environment while ensuring the industry’s global competitiveness.
ISOPA remains actively engaged in these developments, continuously monitoring political and technical discussions at EU level and collaborating across the value chain. We are committed to contributing constructively to the debate and ensuring that upcoming policies support safety, innovation and sustainability.
